Climate target of 1.5°C will not be achieved, says UN chief

Less than a month before COP30, António Guterres emphasized that ‘overcoming the limit is now inevitable’, in relation to the goals of the Paris Agreement

The goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C compared to the pre-industrial era will not be achieved, admitted the UN Secretary-General, this Wednesday (22), a month before the summit of in Belém do Pará. “One thing is already clear: we will not be able to contain global warming below 1.5°C in the coming years,” Guterres said at a meeting at the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) of in Geneva, emphasizing that “overcoming the limit is now inevitable”.

“Global warming is pushing our planet to the limit. Each of the last ten years has been the hottest in history. Ocean heat is breaking records and destroying ecosystems. No country is safe from fires, floods, storms and heat waves,” declared the UN Secretary-General.
