Lula and Trump meet in Malaysia amid tariffs

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and American leader Donald Trump meet this Sunday (26) in Kuala Lumpur, in Malaysia.

The American leader said that both parties must work together and highlighted respect for Lula.

“It’s a great honor to be with the president of Brazil. It’s a great country and they’re doing very well as far as I know,” he said.

When asked about the relationship with Jair Bolsonaro (PL)Trump said that he always had a good relationship with the former president, but that the topic would not be discussed in the meeting with Lula.

“I always liked him. I feel really bad about what happened to him. I always thought he was an honest guy, but he’s been through a lot, he’s been through a lot,” Trump said.

In a brief statement to the press, the said: “We will reach a quick conclusion on tariffs.”

The Brazilian leader stated that the press would have good news after the meeting with the republican. “There is no reason to have a disagreement between Brazil and the United States,” he said.

Lula said he had a “long agenda” to be discussed with Trump, adding that he was optimistic about the possibility of Brazil and USA advance in maintaining the “most civilized possible” relationship.

This was the first scheduled face-to-face meeting between the two presidents and lasted around 50 minutes.

Lula and Trump are in Malaysia to participate in the 47th Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) summit.
