The United States Immigration and Customs Service (ICE) detained an Indian immigrant who served a 43-year sentence for which he was acquitted, and who would be released in October.

Subramanyam Vedam He is now 64 years old. He entered the USA when he was still a minor.

He was accused of killing a friend in 1980when he was just 20 years old.

In August, a judge overturned the conviction after his lawyers presented new ballistic evidence (firearm analysis) that made the man innocent.

When he finally went home, 43 years later, it was detained by the federal police, due to a 1999 deportation.

The arrest took place on October 3, but the case is now being reported by the Associated Press (AP).

The detainee remains at an ICE facility in central Pennsylvania, with lawyers hoping immigration judges will consider the entirety of the case, especially the years he was unjustly imprisoned.

For a time, immigration law allowed people to challenge deportation orders. However as Vedam was arrested he cannot handle the process.

Since August, US President Donald Trump has sent federal forces, such as Border Patrol agents and National Guard soldiers, to several cities under the pretext of high crime rates and prioritized the detention of undocumented migrants.

Trump is fulfilling his promise of “mass deportation”which he did during the 2024 election campaign.
