The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced this Monday (3) his support for the former governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, who is running for mayor of the city as an independent candidate.
The statement came on the eve of the election and caught political analysts by surprise, as Cuomo is a longtime Democrat and Sliwa represents the Republican Party.
In a post on the Truth Social network, Trump stated that voting for Republican Curtis Sliwa would be “a vote for [Zohran] Mamdani,” the official Democratic candidate in the race.

“Whether you like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice,” the president wrote, reinforcing his position that only Cuomo would be able to prevent Mamdani from winning.
The endorsement came shortly after Trump’s interview with the program 60 Minutesfrom CBS News, in which he threatened to cut off federal funds going to the city if Mamdani were elected.
During the conversation, the president also reiterated that he prefers Cuomo to his Democratic rival, whom he called a “communist” on several occasions throughout the campaign.

Cuomo, for his part, had stated in previous interviews that he would reject any support from Trump.
“I have not had and would not have a conversation with the president. My movement is not big enough to include him”, said the former governor on the program Meet the Press last month.
Zohran Mamdani reacted to the news on social media with tongue in cheek, congratulating Cuomo and saying, “I know how hard you worked for this.”
The latest polls have shown divergent results — some indicating a tight race between Cuomo and Mamdani, while others suggest a comfortable advantage for one side.
The election promises to be one of the most unpredictable in the city’s recent history.
