The president () authorized the PL to support the project due to the attacks of January 8, 2023, on the agenda this Tuesday (9) in the Chamber of Deputies, to reactivate Bolsonarist militancy.
The endorsement was given by the former president through his eldest son, senator (PL-RJ), now a pre-candidate for President. According to reports, Flávio asked his father’s opinion when visiting him in prison. Bolsonaro responded that the project would not solve his problem, but it would solve that of his supporters.
The former president’s party resisted the vote on the sentence reduction project (nicknamed the “Dosimetry PL”) in the Chamber of Deputies and insisted on a broad, general and unrestricted amnesty, which could free Bolsonaro from prison.
This Tuesday, the party leader, federal deputy Sóstenes Cavalcante (RJ), said that the PL would not give up on the amnesty, but would support the report by federal deputy Paulinho da Força (Solidaridade-SP) “in the name of these people who have already paid an excessive sentence”.
“So that people can spend Christmas at home, he [Bolsonaro] He even advised, through spokesman Flávio Bolsonaro, that we vote to reduce sentences. That’s why we made the agreement”, he declared. “It was the possible agreement, but we will not give up our fight for amnesty.”
The key turn comes at a time when Bolsonaro and Flávio are trying to mobilize supporters. On this Monday (8), Flávio admitted having made the diagnosis that the militancy was “head down” and “hopeless”.
Flávio has visited his father in prison three times since he began serving his 27-year sentence for an attempted coup. When leaving the Federal Police Superintendence in Brasília this Tuesday, he said that his pre-candidacy for president would also fulfill this role.
“I told him about the general mood of our militants, who had their heads down, were in anguish, without a direction to follow. Now President Bolsonaro has given this direction [ao indicar Flávio como sucessor]”, the senator told journalists.
Flávio met on Monday night with the presidents of PL, Valdemar Costa Neto, PP, senator Ciro Nogueira (PI), and União Brasil, Antônio Rueda, seeking support. Senator Rogério Marinho (PL-RN), leader of the opposition and general secretary of the PL, also participated in the dinner.
As , the leader of the PT in the Chamber, (RJ), said he had “secure information” that the vote on the project was agreed during the meeting.
Privately, leaders of the center reacted badly to Flávio’s candidacy and accused him of blackmailing the group for voting for amnesty for Bolsonaro in exchange for his support in 2026 for the candidacy for president of the governor of São Paulo, (Republicans).
Tarcísio’s ally, the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), passed the law in the plenary this Tuesday morning during a leaders’ meeting — taking part of the federal deputies by surprise.
for five crimes: armed criminal organization, attempted violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, attempted coup d’état, qualified damage through violence and serious threat and deterioration of listed property.
Paulinho da Força’s new opinion could reduce Bolsonaro’s prison time by , according to the rapporteur and opposition parliamentarians.
With the current conviction, the time spent in a closed regime is estimated. In December, the Criminal Executions Court estimated that the former president should transition to the semi-open regime on April 23, 2033 – after almost 8 years.
