A handmade wooden Christmas tree is a practical alternative to traditional trees and a space to show off your creativity. Here’s what you’ll need:
Materials
- The stump is approx. 25 cm long and approx. 20 cm in diameter
- From 30 to 35 twigs of various lengths and diameters from 2 to 2.5 cm
Tools and accessories
- Chainsaw, e.g. STIHL MSA 70 CB cordless saw
- STIHL GTA 30 garden shears or cordless cutter
- M10 threaded rod, 1 m long
- Together
- Marker or light crayon
- Cordless screwdriver plus wood drill (10 mm)
- 2 clamps

Working with chainsaws can be satisfying and an excellent opportunity to develop your skills. It is important not to forget about appropriate protective clothing to ensure safety during use.
Match devices to the task
The most important thing is to choose the right equipment that will make your work easier and not lead to frustration or discouragement. Cordless chainsaws will come in handy for basic workshop work, especially when working in quiet areas and indoors. The MSA 70 model is recommended for precise cutting of branches, bushes and small trees in the home garden or on the property.
The STIHL GTA 30 cordless cutter will be useful for cutting building materials, thick branches or preparing firewood. Once you have collected the necessary materials, you can start working!
Step 1. Prepare a suitable base
Using a cordless chainsaw, e.g. STIHL MSA 70, cut the stump to a length of approximately 25 cm. Depending on the desired height of the tree, you can also create a base that is a few centimeters higher. Make sure the cut is straight so that the Christmas tree will stand stable later.
Step 2. Drill a hole for the rod
Now, in the center of the stump that constitutes the base of the Christmas tree, drill a hole with the diameter of the threaded rod you prepared (10 mm). Drill the stump to a depth of at least 5 cm so that the rod sits firmly in the base.
Step 3. Prepare the branches
Determine the final branch length. Measure a length of approximately 10 cm on several twigs. Each subsequent one should be 5 cm longer. Prepare twigs of different lengths in this way so that you can later create a spreading, evenly branched tree.
Step 4. Trim the branches
Secure the branches to a stable workbench with clamps and cut them to the desired length with a cutter.
Step 5. Drill holes in the branches
In the middle of each branch lying across, drill a hole with the diameter of the threaded rod – in this case 10 mm.
Step 6. Read the angstated vesicles
Now insert the threaded rod into the hole drilled in the base of the Christmas tree. Use a hammer and drive the rod carefully but deeply.
Step 7. Attach the branches
We put the twigs on the threaded rod attached to the base – first the longest ones, then the shorter ones. Your tree will look especially beautiful if, when adding branches, you move it slightly and create a three-dimensional figure. Now the Christmas tree should be wide and stable.
