The prices charged in some cafes and bars continue to fuel controversy on social media, especially when the amounts charged seem to deviate from what many consumers consider reasonable. A simple receipt shared by a well-known restaurant professional once again sparked the debate about how high the price of a coffee can go in Spain, a topic that is also echoed in Portugal.

Jesús Soriano, a hospitality professional known on social media as @Soycamarero, has become an active voice in defending the rights and dignity of workers in the sector. This time, he shared a receipt from an establishment that quickly went viral, generating more than a thousand comments and far exceeding the number of likes.

In the publication, Soriano asked his followers a direct question: “What do you think of these prices?” The receipt showed the consumption of two coffees with milk, a coffee with ice and a chamomile infusion, for a total of 17.30 euros, including VAT, according to the Spanish digital newspaper HuffPost.

Values that generated shock and indignation

According to the published receipt, each coffee with milk cost 4.50 euros, while the coffee with ice was charged at 4.10 euros. The chamomile cost 4.20 euros, just 10 cents more than the coffee with ice.

The comments appeared immediately, with reactions that ranged from irony to indignation. Many users expressed fear that this type of pricing would become increasingly common, even outside of tourist or luxury contexts.

“A cafe like it was in Las Vegas”

Among the most shared responses, one stood out from a user who quipped: “Since when do you write in Spanish in Las Vegas?”, in a clear allusion to the prices normally associated with high-cost tourist destinations.

Another comment was even more direct, classifying the account as “an armed robbery”, reflecting the anger of those who consider these values to be out of touch with everyday reality.

Who defends prices

Not all reactions were negative. Some users defended the establishment, highlighting that the prices were clearly indicated on the menu, according to the same source. One of them commented: “If the prices are on the letter and the receipt is correct, it seems acceptable to me. It’s either read the letter or don’t come back.”

Other followers agreed with this position, but highlighted that they would like to know where the establishment is located. For them, the values would only make sense if it were an exclusive space or a very touristy place, and not a neighborhood cafe.

Sarcasm was also present

As is usual in these discussions, sarcasm was not left out. One of the more creative comments described the coffee as being “made with imported mare’s milk from descendants of Cleopatra’s mares, ice brought from Iceland in vats of solid gold, and tea transported by kayak from Ceylon.”

The publication ended up rekindling a broader debate about the prices charged in restaurants, the perception of value by customers and the importance of transparency, according to . Between the freedom of each establishment to set its prices and consumer expectations, the discussion promises to continue, both in Spain and on this side of the border.
