Maria da Conceição, the oldest woman in Portugal, celebrates her 113th birthday this Monday and left simple advice, but full of experience, for the younger generations. With humor and lucidity, he argues that the secret to a long life is not overdoing your work.

“Don’t work too much, working too much takes a toll on your body,” he said in a video released by the Municipal Council of São Brás de Alportel, in the district of Faro, where the elderly woman is a much-loved figure.

Born on December 22, 1912, Maria da Conceição currently lives in the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de São Brás de Alportel nursing home. At the institution, she is affectionately called “queen”, not only because of her exceptional age, but also because of her serenity, clarity of thought and enjoyment of conversation that she maintains to this day.

Despite the advice she now leaves, those who know her guarantee that she has always been a very hard-working woman. Throughout his life, he went through more than a century of profound social, cultural and economic changes, both in Portugal and in the rest of the world, becoming a true living testimony to the country’s recent history.

The municipality emphasizes that Maria da Conceição continues to win over everyone around her for the memories full of wisdom she shares and for the calm spirit she maintains at 113 years old.

To mark the date, the City Council is organizing a special celebration today, which will also be attended by Joaquim Varela, 110 years old, also from the municipality. A meeting that brings together two rare examples of longevity and resilience in the Algarve.
