The blackmail and pressure from the Donald Trump Administration on the European Union that American platforms in Europe must comply with has escalated to an unprecedented level. This Tuesday night (early morning on Wednesday in Spain), Washington imposed sanctions on several European personalities related to the moderation of content on social networks and the fight against hate speech on platforms such as X, by Elon Musk, or Facebook, by Meta. The US State Department accuses those sanctioned of “censoring Americans” abroad. Among those punished is the former European Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton, responsible for the digital services law in the last legislature. The people targeted by Washington will be prohibited from entering US territory and if they are in the country it may lead to deportation.
