The case of Banco Master, which had its extrajudicial liquidation decreed by the BC (Central Bank), entered the Brazilian political debate and is being explored by different ideological camps.
In an interview with Now CNNpolitical scientist Cristiano Noronha, vice-president of Arko Advice, assesses that the secrecy imposed on the case by Minister Dias Toffoli, of the STF (Supreme Federal Court), and the confrontation imposed by him fuel speculation about who could be involved.
“This issue of determining secrecy, this decision to investigate, to do this, all of this ends up fueling speculation about who would actually be involved”, he explains.
The expert also comments on: “The issue is already being politicized at the local level in Brasília, because we also saw political figures defending the purchase of Banco Master by BRB, which is a public bank”, he details.
Noronha highlights that the revelation of the contract that the law firm of Viviane Barci de Moraes, wife of , maintained with Banco Master serves as ammunition for the opposition and recalls the various requests for impeachment of the minister.
Strategic distance from the government
Asked about the government’s stance of avoiding direct confrontation and maintaining the Central Bank’s autonomy discourse, the vice-president of Arko Advice believes that this is a wise strategy.
“It makes perfect sense for the government to do this, firstly because it distances itself from the problem, insists on an absolutely technical decision that the Central Bank took and eventually does not politicize this issue further.”
With this distance, Noronha explains that the government avoids being accused by the opposition of trying to shield important actors if the involvement of relevant figures in the political and legal scene comes to light.
