Cruzeiro hires Matheus Cunha, ex-Flamengo, until 2028

Goalkeeper is the second reinforcement confirmed by the Minas Gerais club for next season, after the agreement with Colombian striker Neiser Villarreal

The announced this Thursday (1) the signing of the goalkeeper Matheus Cunha24 years old, who signed a contract valid until the end of 2028. The player is the second reinforcement confirmed by the Minas Gerais club for next season, after the agreement with Colombian striker Neiser Villarreal. The agreement had already been underway since the middle of the year. In July, Flamengo was notified of the pre-contract signed between Matheus Cunha and Cruzeiro. The goalkeeper had a contract with the Rio club until December 2025 and will be available to the Celeste team from January. The hiring was approved by coach Tite.

During the Club World Cup, held in Qatar, Flamengo released the athlete after the 2-1 victory over Cruz Azul so that he could return to Brazil and attend the birth of his first child. As a result, Matheus Cunha did not return to play for the club before the agreement with Cruzeiro was confirmed.

Revealed in São Paulo’s youth categories, the goalkeeper transferred to Flamengo in the under-20s, in a negotiation that had the approval of Rogério Ceni. At the Rio club, he gained space in the professional squad and became a starter for part of coach Jorge Sampaoli’s tenure.

In August 2023, Flamengo refused a proposal from Nottingham Forest, from England, which indicated values ​​between 8 and 10 million euros. Despite European interest, Matheus Cunha remained in the Red and Black squad.

Between 2021 and 2025, the goalkeeper played 55 matches for Flamengo and was part of champion squads in different competitions, even though he played, for most of the period, as a substitute.

In his farewell, the player thanked the club and the fans. “Flamengo shaped me as a player and as a man. I had the privilege of winning titles, learning from giants and representing a shirt that weighs heavily. Thank you to everyone who was part of this journey. Thank you Flamengo. Thank you, Nation!”, he stated.
