As winter slowly ends, gardeners start thinking about growing these beautiful plants. Tulips are popular perennial bulbs that come in over 15,000 varieties. They differ in height, color and even shape of flowers. These are annual plants that symbolize the coming spring.
Their cultivation is not difficult, and they bloom from May to May. If we plant them in the garden, it is recommended to place the bulbs in special baskets to protect against voles and facilitate removal. However, there is also another method. You can use egg cartons to plant tulips in the ground.
Planting tulips in egg cartons is an interesting and ecological way to make them grow evenly on the bed and at the same time reduce the amount of unnecessary waste. Such extrudates better protect the bulbs against pests. Tulips grow next to each other, at symmetrical intervals and look like a bouquet on a flower bed.
The best time for planting tulips in pots is from mid-September to the end of October. However, there is also a contingency plan – tulips can be planted in the ground in Februaryalthough much depends on the weather and the quality of the soil. However, you have to wait for heavier frosts and be patient, and even be prepared for the flowers to bloom less frequently or only in the next season.
If in there are a lot of rodents, the extrudate can also be placed in a plastic basket, which will limit their access to the bulbs. However, we should use cardboard egg packages (not Styrofoam ones), which decompose in the ground, so they are ecological. They also attract earthworms that loosen the soil. It’s beneficial for the plants. The choice of place is also important. The soil should be permeable and the area should not be swampy.
We cut the top off the egg cartons and then put the bulbs into the holes – with the tip up. Then we plan the appearance of the garden. Place tall tulips at the back of the flowerbed and short tulips at the front. It is also worth mixing the colors of tulips – even in one punnet.
Pour a little soil into the holes in the pouches. This will make it easier for the roots growing from the bulbs to get started. Then we dig a hole of appropriate depth (usually about 10-15 cm) and place the prepared extrudate with bulbs in it. Cover it with soil and water it lightly.
