On the day that marks the 47th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, which overthrew the monarchy of Shah Mohammad Reza Palahvi, CNN Portugal spoke with lawyer and human rights activist Chirine Ardakani about the situation of Iranians under the theocratic regime.
The jurist, who represents the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Nages Mohammadi, abroad, said that the Islamic Republic functions as a form of fascism. And the Portuguese must remember this, taking into account that they lived under Salazar’s dictatorship, even though the Ayatollahs’ regime can be held responsible for much more serious crimes, crimes against humanity.
Chirine Ardakani also said that, at a time when desperate populations are looking for saviors in false prophets, it is necessary to understand that neither Donald Trump nor Benjamin Netanyahu are a viable option for the future of a democratic Iran. The future and freedom of Iranians, concludes the Franco-Iranian jurist, depends on pressure from the United Nations and the European Union and, above all, through negotiations within the framework of International Law.
