The president defends the quality of the infrastructure and the railway service despite “unavoidable incidents”

“The system [ferroviario] detect, act and correct.” With this statement, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has defended the quality of railway infrastructure and services in Spain. Sánchez has normalized the incidents that “occur daily” and that are “inevitable”, while praising the role of a mode of transport that “12 million users use every week.”

During his speech in the Plenary Session of Congress, Pedro Sánchez, has highlighted the growth in maintenance of the railway network during his mandate: “Let’s not deceive citizens. Expenditure on maintenance has gone from 1,700 million in 2018 to around 5,000 million in 2025. And investment in railways, discounting inflation, has grown by 75%.” The president has opened up to the debate on the resources dedicated to the conservation of the networks, and has highlighted the agreement reached with the unions in the sector, with 1,800 million in extra spending on the care of the infrastructure for the period 2026-2030 and the hiring of 3,600 professionals between Adif, Renfe and the Railway Safety Agency. “If the CIAF experts tell us that we should do more, we will do it,” he stated.

Sánchez has pointed out in defense of the management of the Ministry of Transport that the number of serious railway accidents has decreased by 11% compared to the period 2012-2018, when the Popular Party governed, while the volume of travelers has experienced a jump of 15%.
