Senator Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL), president of the Senate’s Economic Affairs Committee (CAE), stated this Wednesday (11th) that the collegiate formalized requests to the Federal Police (PF) for access to documents, including confidential ones, to support the investigation of the Master case. The statements were made after a meeting with the general director of the PF, Andrei Rodrigues, held later this afternoon, at the corporation’s headquarters.
According to Renan, the objective of the initiative is to reinforce ongoing investigations and avoid any type of interference in the progress of the process.
— Our objective as the Economic Affairs Committee is to strengthen the Federal Police investigation so that, under no circumstances, there is shielding — stated the senator.

He informed that the CAE submitted requests requesting information related to ongoing investigations, including data protected by confidentiality, and that the PF committed to providing technical support to speed up the transfer of the material.
— We submitted a request for information, including confidential information. There are several inquiries, and the director will also provide technical assistance to speed up the information we want — he said.
Renan maintained that the commission acts within its competence to supervise the financial system and cited Complementary Law 105, which authorizes permanent congressional commissions to request data protected by bank secrecy.

The statements took place on the same day that members of the subcommittee created to monitor the case are currently participating in an institutional meeting at the Federal Supreme Court (STF) with the president of the Court, Edson Fachin.
Last week, CAE senators had already asked the Central Bank for the full documentation related to the case. According to reports, the president of the BC, Gabriel Galípolo, conditioned the sending of the data to the authorization of Minister Dias Toffoli, rapporteur of the process at the STF.
Renan stated that the commission’s work does not compete with any parliamentary commissions of inquiry and that the collegiate’s intention is to contribute to holding those involved accountable.
— Our work is permanent. We want to help improve legislation so that this does not happen again and help to further clarify this investigation so that those responsible are punished. The Senate wants to help with this.
In addition to institutional visits and calls from authorities, the working group’s work plan foresees a cycle of thematic public hearings, starting with the extrajudicial liquidation of the bank and the actions of the BC and the Securities and Exchange Commission (CVM). Specific hearings are also planned to discuss possible supervisory failures and regulatory bottlenecks revealed by the case.
At the end of the work, the CAE must consolidate a report with conclusions and recommendations, which could result in legislative proposals to tighten inspection rules and mitigate the risk of new collapses in the financial system. One of the proposals should be to expand the BC’s regulatory scope to cover the supervision of funds, one of the mechanisms that the Master allegedly used to conceal fraudulent operations, according to the investigation.
