Lack of energy, plenty of solidarity: 300,000 tiles have already been delivered to Leiria

In the Leiria region, around 20,000 people remain without electricity, more than two weeks after Storm Kristin. The authorities guarantee that they are working as quickly as possible.

The Clube Recreativo de Chãs mirrors the state of many other buildings after the Kristin, Leonardo and Marta depressions. In the district of Leiria, more than two weeks after the storms, there are still many houses without electricity. This is the case of Paulo Antunes’ family.

“We had to turn off the freezer to be able to take a hot water bath. Fortunately we have a gas stove. We tried to contact E-Redes, but we haven’t been successful yet”, says Paulo Antunes.

Marinha Grande and Pombal are the municipalities most affected. A very significant part of the entire electrical structure is still down.

The president of the Intermunicipal Community of the Leiria Region met on Thursday with ANACOM to assess the extent of the destruction. The authority has also met with operators to try to restore communications as quickly as possible.

Trying to maintain normality in the chaos caused by the floods is a difficult challenge to overcome. But what is lacking in electricity there is plenty of hands to help. Leiria City Council, unable to respond to the number of requests for support, launched an urgent appeal to the population and companies.

The response didn’t take long: tarpaulins have already been delivered to 35 thousand people, 300 thousand tiles and 8.6 thousand families are being helped with food and hygiene items. Numbers that add up to solidarity.
