President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sanctioned this Friday (13) Law No. 15,348, which establishes the Gás do Povo program. The initiative ensures free refilling of 13-kilogram (kg) cooking gas cylinders for families registered in the Single Registry for Social Programs of the Federal Government (CadÚnico), as long as they have a per capita income of up to half the minimum wage.

In a statement, the Presidency of the Republic informed that the program seeks to address energy poverty among low-income families, especially the difficulty in accessing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), popularly known as cooking gas. The government’s forecast is that the program will be fully operational in March, when 15 million families (around 50 million people) will be covered.

The initiative involves the Ministries of Mines and Energy and Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight Against Hunger, in addition to Caixa.

“With the milestone of 10,000 accredited sales points in less than two months, one in every six LPG resellers in the country is connected to the initiative”, highlighted Planalto.

To apply for the program, the family must be a Bolsa Família beneficiary with at least two people, have a per capita income of up to half the minimum wage and keep their CadÚnico updated in the last 24 months. It is also necessary that the CPF of the family responsible is in order and that the registration does not present pending issues such as registration investigation or evidence of death.
