India’s Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) has approved a major step towards expanding the country’s combat aircraft fleet. As part of the MRFA (Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft) program, it is planned to purchase 114 French Rafale fighters, while the value of this acquisition is estimated at approximately 40 billion dollars. This step is not only to strengthen India’s defense capabilities, but also to deepen cooperation with France in the field of defense industry. Most of the new aircraft should be produced directly in India, which is part of a broader strategy to promote local production and technological self-sufficiency.

According to India’s Ministry of Defense, the move is in response to growing regional security threats. Approval by the DAC allows negotiations to begin on the details of the acquisition, including price, armament, training and maintenance. However, it is not yet a final signing of the agreement. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized that this is a strategic investment to ensure the readiness of the Indian Air Force for various types of conflicts.
Local production as a priority
The Indian government is emphasizing domestic aircraft production. Of the planned 114 fighters, up to 90 should be produced in India, which could significantly boost the local defense industry. Part of the requirements is also the integration of domestic systems and weapons, which, however, so far reflects France’s reluctance to take responsibility for such modifications. This aspect may be one of the key points of the upcoming negotiations between the two parties.
The Indian Army has already acquired 36 Rafale fighters in the past, with another 26 ordered in 2025. The new contract would thus significantly expand the fleet of these multi-purpose aircraft, which are among the most modern in the world.
Rafale: a universal combat machine
Rafale fighters, which belong to category 4.5. generations, are known for their versatility and ability to fulfill different types of missions. They are considered a competitor of the American F-35 and F-18 aircraft. The maximum speed of the machine reaches Mach 1.8, while it can carry weapons with a total weight of up to 9.5 tons at 14 storage stations. The range without additional refueling is 1,850 kilometers, which makes it an effective tool for long operations.
France’s Dassault Aviation, which makes the fighter jets, currently has orders for Rafale deliveries to several countries, including Egypt, Qatar, Greece, Croatia, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates. This wide international presence confirms the high confidence in the quality and capabilities of these aircraft.
A significant step for India
If the deal for the purchase of 114 Rafale fighters is fulfilled, it will be one of the largest contracts in the history of the Indian defense sector.
