This Monday, the Constitutional Court (TC) proclaimed António José Seguro as the winner of the elections for president of the Republic, adding an additional 3.5 million votes in the second round, according to the final results.
António José Seguro achieved 3,502,613 votes (66.84%), while André Ventura received 1,737,950 votes (33.16%), according to the final results released after the general counting assembly of the election for President of the Republic by the TC.
Out of a total of 11,025,823 registered, 5,240,563 votes were considered validly cast, registering 177,072 blank votes and 98,342 invalid votes, according to the results released today after the conclusion, on Sunday, of the vote in 20 parishes, which postponed the elections by a week due to bad weather.
According to the final results, 5,515,977 voters were registered (50.03%), with abstention being 49.97% (5,509,846).
“For having obtained more than half of the votes validly cast, the candidate António José Martins Seguro was (…) elected. It is these results that, on behalf of the Constitutional Court, it is up to me to announce, proclaiming, accordingly, the citizen António José Martins Seguro elected President of the Republic”, can be read in the note signed by the president of the TC, José João Abrantes.
The most voted President ever
António José Seguro’s victory with more than 3.5 million votes is a record.
A week ago, Seguro had become the President of the Republic elected with the highest number of votes cast in 50 years of democracy, surpassing the 3,459,521 of Mário Soares in the 1991 elections. He was, however, behind the 70.3% in the re-election of Mário Soares, who remains the highest percentage ever.
In the second round, on February 8, Seguro had won all districts and autonomous regions and 303 municipalities. On Sunday, it brought together three more municipalities: Álcácer do Sal, Arruda dos Vinhos and Golegã, which postponed voting due to bad weather.
