Cuba in shock from Trump’s blockade: We insist that the country does not pose a threat to the United States

Cuba declared on Tuesday that is not a threat to the United States and that the energy blockade by the administration of US President Donald Trump is undermining Havana’s efforts to help fight drug trafficking. TASR writes about it according to an AFP report.

The Caribbean nation is currently struggling with an energy crisis after the US president decided to cut it off from oil supplies. Cuba lost a major source of raw materials after US special forces captured and kidnapped Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, a longtime ally of Havana, from the country last month. Trump has declared that no more Venezuelan oil will go to the island and has threatened to impose tariffs on any country that tries to supply it.

“We insist that Cuba does not pose a threat to the United States,” said Col. Juan Carlos Poey, head of the Department of the Interior’s counternarcotics division. He said the United States’ energy blockade was undermining its efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region. Poey described the landscape as “a protective wall on the sea”which prevents the shipment of cocaine from South America to the United States.
