February is a month when the garden is mostly dormant, but right now is the perfect time for the first important work of the year. If you want the birds to come back and find a safe home in the spring, it is not a good idea to put off cleaning the boxes. It is a simple act, but it can decide the health of the chicks and successful nesting.

Do not expose the birds to disease

Old nests, feathers and leftover food from previous seasons can be a breeding ground for . If you leave them, the new occupants of the hutch could be exposed to diseases and nasty bugs that could damage the nest. Therefore, removing all old material is not only hygienic, but also vital.

Cleaning the booth is also an opportunity to check its condition. The wood can crack over time, screws can loosen, and the entry hole can shrink. How to clean the booths in February

  1. Carefully remove the booth from the tree or post and wear gloves.
  2. Take out the old nest, feathers and all debris, every bit is important to remove.
  3. Rinse the booth with clean water and, if necessary, remove dirt with a soft brush. Do not use chemicals, the birds could be sensitive to them.
  4. Allow the booth to dry thoroughly in the fresh air.
  5. Check the wood, screws and entry hole, and repair any minor damage.
  6. Return the booth to its original location and secure well.
