Brasileirão: Surgical, Corinthians beat Athletico away from home and go 5th

Corinthians beat Athletico Paranaense this Thursday (19) 1-0, in a delayed game valid for the 2nd round of the Brasileirão. Surgical, Alvinegro didn’t have a great performance, but took advantage of the best chance they had in the match with an undefendable ball from Rodrigo Garro that ended up in the back of the goal.

Access to the stadium was restricted to women, children up to 12 years old, the elderly and people with disabilities due to a punishment suffered by Furacão, imposed after a classic against Coritiba in the 2025 Series B. On that occasion, members of the visiting sector at Couto Pereira fought among themselves.

With the result, Timão rises from 12th to 5th place in the Brasileirão, overtaking Furacão, sixth, who lost their unbeaten streak in the Brasileirão. Dorival Júnior’s team’s next commitment is in the quarterfinals of the Campeonato Paulista, next Sunday. Athletico faces Londrina in the Paranaense semi-final.

The Game

Athletico Paranaense and Corinthians played a hot game at Arena da Baixada. The pitch was far from ideal conditions, and the referee used yellow cards to try to discipline the players on the field.

In the first minutes, Athletico tried to set its pace, putting pressure on the opponent, and they succeeded – Viveiros had two good chances to score, one when winning with Gabriel Paulista’s speed, and another, trying to cover up Hugo.

The Colombian made the black and white defense hell. It was the penalty for Matheus Bidu, who made a foul at the top of the area, which earned the full-back a yellow card – due to a complaint. In the charge, Furacão wasted. Julimar missed the target when trying to move Hugo Souza.

Corinthians had difficulty attacking, but they were effective when they managed to do so. On a cross from Matheuzinho, Memphis lost the dispute at the top, but the ball reached the feet of Rodrigo Garro. The Argentine hit a bludger on Santos’ goal, putting Timão ahead on the scoreboard.

One of Athletico’s most dangerous chances came in a real confusion in the black and white defense. After a rebound, Viveros – always him! – finished without a goalkeeper, and Raniele saved on the line.

At the end of the first half, Viveiros complained about an elbow from Gabriel Paulista in the middle, but VAR did not recommend reviewing the play. There was still time for an argument between the Colombian and Gustavo Henrique due to the attacker’s harsh foul.

In the second half, new pressure from Athletico. Esquivel was constantly activated from the side, reaching Hugo Souza’s goal quickly. The goalkeeper made a great save on a cross from the number 37 and had to recover to put pressure on Chiqueti, who got the rebound and hit it wide.

Every second ball was from Paraná. The Esquivel-Chiquetti duo gave the sector a headache, and if the equalizer didn’t come, it wasn’t for lack of trying. There were many shots, although not all of them on target, which pushed Timão into defense.

The Corinthians defense, which not long ago did not inspire confidence, stood up well and withstood the pressure, and even with 13 minutes of stoppage time – nine, and then four more – managed to sustain the result.
