Well-known actor did not survive amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. “He was the funniest,” recalls Patrick Dempsey (Derek).

“He was the funniest. He was a joy to work with and I want to remember him in that spirit because whenever he was with us he brought so much fun. He had a great sense of humor.”

This is how Patrick Dempsey – or Derek Shepherd – remembers Eric Dane. The actor, who gained worldwide fame on Grey’s Anatomy, he died this Thursday.

Eric brought Mark Sloan, the plastic surgeon also known as McSteamy, to the screen. He also stood out in the series Euphoria, with the character Cal Jacobs.

The actor had just 53 years old. Couldn’t resist amyotrophic lateral sclerosisafter a “courageous battle”, announced his family.

It was in 2025 that Eric Dane learned he had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). From then on, the actor became a “passionate advocate” for research and dissemination of the disease.

“Eric was a light. You could see that sparkle in him effortlessly, both on Grey’s Anatomy and when he was with Rebecca and the girls. During filming, his eyes sparkled; he had perfect comedic moments, a line that would leave you speechless! We will miss him,” wrote Kim Raver, who was Teddy Altman in the same series.

Eric Dane was born in San Francisco, USA. He died surrounded by his wife, his two daughters and his closest friends.
