As technology advances, scientists are trying to understand more and more precisely which specific ingredients in food influence human genes and aging mechanisms. A team of researchers from King’s College London took a closer look at theobromine – a naturally occurring alkaloid present in dark chocolate.

Unlike chronological age, which is measured in years, biological age shows the condition of the body – based on changes occurring in DNA and cells.

The first one analyzed the level of theobromine in blood serum and compared it with epigenetic indicators of aging, including DNA methylation patterns. Methylation are chemical “tags” attached to DNA that change gene activity and evolve with age. The second one measured the length of telomeres, i.e. the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes. Shorter telomeres are associated with a greater risk of chronic diseases and an overall acceleration of the aging process.

Scientists concluded that people with higher levels of theobromine in their blood had a statistically lower biological age compared to their chronological age. Their bodies – at least at the cellular level – aged more slowly. However, Professor Jordana Bell – co-author of the study and a specialist in the field of epigenomics – emphasized that This is not an encouragement to eat unlimited chocolate. The analysis showed how everyday food products can have a long-term impact on health.

Interestingly, the team also checked for other metabolites present in cocoa and coffee. However, they did not show a similarly strong relationship with reduced biological age. This suggests that the effect may be specific to theobromine. So far, only its stimulating effect and possible impact on the cardiovascular system and toxicity in dogs have been indicated. Scientists emphasize that they approach the study with caution – it shows a relationship, not a direct cause-and-effect relationship. To confirm the protective effect of theobromine, in-depth analyzes are needed, which have already been carried out by subsequent specialists from King’s College London. Still, the discovery proves that even small dietary choices can have a fundamental impact on the body.

The team of scientists emphasized in their study that although the results look promising, moderation is the most important thing. How much dark chocolate can you eat per day? The maximum recommended portion is approximately 20 g per day, or approximately 3 cubes. Most often, it is said to consume from 1 to 3 cubes, which gives from 7 to 20 g of the product.

This amount provides on average from 40 to 120 kcal – depending on the cocoa content and added sugar. For comparison, 100 g of dark chocolate contains approximately 500 – 600 kcal, so it is easy to exceed the healthy limit. A small portion allows you to benefit from the beneficial properties of cocoa and theobromine, and at the same time does not disturb your diet.

It is best to choose chocolate with a cocoa content of at least 70%. A good time to consume it is the first half of the day – after breakfast and before lunch. The theobromine and caffeine contained in it have a slightly stimulating effect, so it may make it difficult for sensitive people to fall asleep in the evening. It is worth treating it as part of a balanced menu, and not as an unlimited daily dessert.
