- Marie underwent assisted reproduction in Cyprus.
- Doctors gave her only a five percent chance of getting pregnant.
- The triplets were born by caesarean section and spent nine weeks in the ICU.
- The happy mother claims that it is easier for her to take care of children at an advanced age.
Marie from the Swedish city of Gothenburg, who already has four sons with her husband, decided in the fall of 2024 that she would like to have another child. Therefore, the couple traveled to Cyprus in November so that she could undergo assisted reproduction. During the procedure, doctors transferred three embryos, which were created from another woman’s eggs and her husband’s sperm, into her uterus to maximize the chance of pregnancy. “I am healthy and in the past I have not had any problems during childbirth. Everything has always been very easy,” she said.
The doctors warned the nurse that pregnancy at such an advanced age is very unlikely. “They said I only have a five percent chance,” added Marie. In the end, however, she was shocked when she found out that she was pregnant and expecting triplets three days after the broadcast. “I was incredibly surprised, but very happy,” she admitted.
According to medical professionals, Marie had a higher risk of preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, hypertension and premature birth. “We preferred not to tell anyone that we were expecting triplets. We didn’t know if they would all survive. When they found out later, it was shocking to them. Some were skeptical, but most of our family and friends were happy with us,” remarked the Swede.
The triplets were born on May 12, 2025 by caesarean section. The children, Charlie, Lorinne and Lara, spent nine weeks in the intensive care unit (ICU) and were allowed home on July 21. “Some friends were worried about how we would take care of them. I confess, I didn’t know it either for a few weeks. Later we got a good nanny, who now helps us a lot. We both also work from home and take turns at night,” stated Marie.
Nevertheless, the new mother believes that motherhood at an advanced age is easier. “When I was young, I didn’t know how to take care of children so well. Now it’s much easier with help. I have always tried to live healthy and take care of myself, and this also helps me in raising children. They keep me young in body and soul. I hope to be healthy for many more years and see how they grow,” she concluded.
