The Chamber of Deputies approved this Wednesday (25) the free trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union (EU). The decision still remains to be approved in the senate, the final stage to become effective. In the Senate, Senator Tereza Cristina (PP-MS), vice-president of the FPA (Agricultural Parliamentary Front), should be the rapporteur.
Representative Marcos Pereira (Republicanos-SP), who is the rapporteur of the text in the Chamber, participated in an earlier meeting with the vice-president of the Republic and also Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, Geraldo Alckmin, and with the president of the Chamber, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), to try to get the vote right.
Hugo Motta had already said on Saturday (21) that the Chamber would prioritize voting on the trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union this week.
“With the uncertainties surrounding the imposition of tariffs by the United States, Brazil is left to fight for predictability in international trade relations. Therefore, we will prioritize the vote on the Mercosur-EU agreement next week”, said Motta in a publication on X at the time.
The agreement was sent to Congress by the government in early February. The Legislature needs to approve it. Last week, deputy Arlindo Chinaglia (PT-SP), had presented leaders and Motta with a report on the agreement made by Mercosur with the EU.
