Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkiyan, together with two other representatives, will temporarily lead the country after the death of the supreme spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iranian state television reported on Sunday. Among the officials mentioned is the head of Iran’s judiciary, Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ezei, state television reported, citing Mohammad Mochber, one of Khamenei’s advisers.
The formation of such a transitional council is enshrined in law in the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Times of Israel (TOI) portal specifies. It consists of the acting president of Iran, the head of the country’s judiciary and a member of the Guardian Council. This is chosen by Iran’s Expediency Council, which advises the supreme leader and resolves any disputes with the parliament.
Under Iranian law, the influential Council of Experts must elect a new supreme leader “as soon as possible.” At the same time, the Iranian judiciary confirmed on Sunday that during the American-Israeli attacks on Iran on Saturday the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), General Mohammad Pakpur, and the adviser of the Iranian Supreme Leader, Ali Shamkhani, were killed.
Members of Khamenei’s family were supposed to have perished in the attacks
At least three family members of Iran’s supreme spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei have lost their lives in US-Israeli military strikes on Iran. The Revolutionary Guards promise to punish the Ayatollah’s killers
