Trump plays down chances of Reza Pahlavi becoming Iran’s next leader

United States President Donald Trump played down the possibility of Reza Pahlavi assuming leadership of Iran, saying he would prefer someone from within the country to take command.

Pahlavi is heir to the Shah monarchy and has been in exile in the United States for decades.

“Some people like him, and we haven’t given it much thought. It seems to me that an insider would be more appropriate,” he commented.

Pahlavi has positioned himself as a prominent figure in the Iranian opposition.

But Trump said that while “he seems like a very nice person,” it was more likely that “someone on the inside, who is popular, if there is such a thing,” would be a better candidate.
