At least four people were killed and two are missing on Tuesday after a wooden footbridge connecting two cliffs collapsed on El Bocal beach near the northern Spanish city of Santander. TASR informs about it based on the reports of the Spanish TV and radio station RTVE and the EFE agency.
At the time of the accident, which happened around 4:30 p.m., there were a total of seven young people on the footbridge, the mayor of Santander, Gema Igualová, told the journalists on the spot. One person was saved and taken to the hospital with hypothermia.
A large team of rescuers was dispatched to the area. The local fire brigade, maritime rescue service and local police were also mobilized. A navy rescue vessel also joined the operation. María José Sáenzová de Buruagaová, head of the Cantabria region, also came to the scene of the accident. The cause of the collapse of the wooden footbridge was not immediately known.
