Norwegian police investigate incendiary device that detonated in the early hours of Sunday without causing any injuries
Norwegian police are investigating an explosion recorded in the early hours of this Sunday (March 8, 2026) near the United States Embassy in Oslo, capital of the Scandinavian country. There were no injuries reported.
According to Oslo police, residents reported hearing a “strong bang” around 1am (local time). The explosion was caused by an incendiary device, according to Frode Larsen, leader of the local police’s joint investigation and intelligence unit.
Authorities say the embassy entrance suffered damage. So far, no one has been arrested. Investigators believe that the diplomatic building may have been the target of the attack and are seeking to identify those responsible and the motivation. The information is from AP News.
“We are at the beginning of the investigation, but we are working with multiple hypotheses. Given the current security scenario, it is natural to consider whether it was a targeted attack on the United States Embassy”said Frode Larsen, leader of the joint investigation and intelligence unit of the Oslo police.
According to a US official, the incendiary device was inside a backpack and exploded outside the entrance to the embassy’s consular affairs sector.

The PST (Norwegian police security) service said it had mobilized additional personnel following the incident, but stated that the country’s terrorist alert level had not changed.
The Norwegian Minister of Justice and Public Security, , classified the episode as “unacceptable” and said that the case is being treated with the highest priority.
“The police are investigating the case with significant resources and, to date, there is nothing to indicate that the situation poses a danger to the public.”he declared.
The United States Embassy in Oslo referred press inquiries to the State Department. There was no immediate response.
