BEIRUT, March 8 (Reuters) – Israel’s military said it struck Iranian commanders in the Lebanese capital in the early hours of Sunday, expanding the scope of its campaign into the heart of Beirut after days of attacks that left nearly 400 people dead.
The drone attack was the first within the city limits of the Lebanese capital since hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah resumed last week, and came amid heavy shelling of Beirut’s southern suburbs and the country’s south and east.
Israel said it targeted top commanders of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard Quds Force, but did not name them.
“Lebanon Quds Force Corps commanders operated to promote terrorist attacks against the State of Israel and its civilians, while simultaneously operating for the IRGC in Iran,” the Israeli military said in a statement.
