The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), defended an “impartial investigation” into the Banco Master case and said that issues like this are always raised in elections, but said he believes that it will not be the only topic of the campaign and highlighted the existence of other ongoing operations. The statements were made this Monday (9) in a telephone interview with Metropolis Radiofrom Bahia.
On the occasion, Motta was asked about how the Banco Master case affects the political universe and this year’s election. “We have to defend the impartial investigation of any and all problems that exist in our country. This problem with Banco Master, we have analyzed and the Federal Supreme Court itself has closely monitored and taken important decisions, like the one it took last week”, said the president of the Chamber.
Afterwards, the deputy also praised the work of the Federal Police and the Public Ministry in the case. “The institutions that are monitoring and investigating must operate without any type of interference and correctly seeking the eventual punishment of those who have committed some type of offense,” he stated.
Motta then admitted that the Banco Master case will probably be the subject of the election and defended a “high-level” debate on the process.
“Regarding the influence of this problem on the electoral period, we have already seen here in Brazil, in the recent past, that this type of operation, this type of problem, always becomes an election issue. The narratives are made according to the convenience of the political side to which the operation will have some commitment”, said the president of the Chamber.
Motta added: “I don’t see that this will be the only issue. We also have other operations taking place in our country, around other issues that could become problems in the election. I hope that the debate can take place not in this police context, but in the context of real problems, such as public security, job and income generation.”
