The auction for Galeão airport (RJ) should receive three proposals and not five, as expected by the Ministry of Ports and Airports. This is the most anticipated event of March and will take place on the 30th.
Recently, the Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, stated that there were five companies interested in submitting a proposal – in addition to Changi and Vinci Compass, which currently manage the terminal in partnership.
Among the potential competitors were the Spanish Aena, the Swiss Zurich, the Argentine Corporación America and the German Fraport. However, the last two are still evaluating and should no longer present a proposal, according to the report. CNN Infra. No official statement has been made so far.
The auction is an attempt to turn the page on one of the most problematic deals in Brazilian infrastructure in the last decade. In 2013, when the airport was purchased by the consortium between Odebrecht and Changi, the climate with the Brazilian economy was optimistic and there were strong expectations of accelerated growth in the airline sector – which ended up not happening.
A winning bid in that auction, the R$19 billion at the time became priceless in a context of economic recession and pandemic.
Designed after a contractual renegotiation process within the scope of the TCU (Federal Audit Court), the new competition is considered strategic to redefine the future of the terminal.
Galeão is one of the main entry points for foreigners into the country and a very popular domestic route. In 2025, the airport handled 18 million passengers, which represented 13% of the entire national flow.
The winner of the auction will manage the asset with new parameters, such as the end of the partnership with Infraero, which currently holds a 49% shareholding.
Furthermore, it will be exempt from building the third runway for take-offs and landings, and will pay the government a variable annual grant (20% of gross revenue), instead of a fixed amount, as was the case before.
