Tulips are one of the most popular garden flowers, but planting them does not have to be the same as usual. More and more gardeners use a simple trick using egg cartons.
Planning a tulip bed often ends with a chaotic arrangement of the bulbs. The flowers then grow at uneven spacing and it is difficult to achieve the intended pattern. The simple way is using cardboard egg cartons. After preparing the flower bed, simply place it on the ground and insert one tulip bulb into each depression, with the tip facing up. Thanks to this, the spaces between the plants are automatically even, without using a ruler or string.

After arranging the bulbs, the whole thing is covered with soil. The soil layer should be approximately three times the height of the bulb. As a result tulips grow in a perfectly ordered arrangement.
Cardboard extrusions have another advantage. They decompose in the soil over time. They are made of cellulose, which becomes a breeding ground for microorganisms and earthworms that improve the structure of the earth. Additionally, the cardboard acts as a delicate separator between the bulbs. Thanks to this, they do not touch each other directly and have more space to grow. In heavy, moist soil it can reduce the risk of rot.

Some gardeners also note that such a layer can be thin an obstacle for rodentswhich often nibble flower bulbs. However, it is important to use only raw cardboard extrusions without prints or coatings. Plastic packaging will not decompose in the ground and may harm the soil.
