Bomb threat forces the evacuation of a bank in Santa Maria da Feira

A man reportedly left a bag at the bank claiming it contained explosives. The GNR evacuated the bank and nearby establishments, including a barbershop, and cut off traffic in the area.

A bank branch in Santa Maria de Lamas, in the municipality of Santa Maria da Feira, was evacuated this Wednesday due to a bomb threat, which also resulted in road closures, said a local source and the financial institution involved.

The situation occurred at around 12:30 pm and occurred at Millennium BCP, which has already confirmed the occurrence, said it was cooperating with the authorities and provided other details for later.

The banking establishment then activated security protocols, which led the GNR, whose local headquarters is located less than a kilometer away, to evacuate the bank building, a barbershop and other adjoining stores, also cutting off the streets around the branch’s perimeter to road and pedestrian traffic.

“What the GNR told us is that a man wearing a hat and glasses entered the bank, left a bag there, said he had explosives and came out again with nothing”, one of the customers of the evacuated barbershop tells Lusa.

When GNR de Lamas was contacted, no one answered the call. The Aveiro GNR command only confirmed that several agents were deployed to the location, but no further information was made available.
