arrives as one of the franchise’s most daring experiments in a long time, defying the embedded image of a series dominated by battles and gyms to sincerely embrace the universe of cozy games.

Published exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2, the game is a life simulation in which the player builds, plants, decorates and takes care of a ruined world alongside Pokémon, with an aesthetic reminiscent of a cross between Minecraft, Animal Crossing and Dragon Quest Builders, but with the emotional signature and humor typical of the Pokémon Company. Instead of orienting everything towards conflict, Pokopia opts for care, patience and reconstruction, creating an experience that, despite being tame, reveals surprising narrative and mechanical depth.

A new kind of adventure

The story of Pokémon Pokopia begins in a desolate setting, where Pokémon and humans lived in harmony, but time and some undetermined disaster have reduced the landscape to a desolate world, almost devoid of life. The only visible resident is a Tangrowth, now addressed as Professor Tangrowth, who serves as a solitary and somewhat philosophical guide to what remains of that time.

It is in this context that the protagonist appears: a Ditto. Instead of being confined in a Poké Ball, he wakes up transformed into human form, carrying not only the traditional eyes characteristic of the species, but also a desire to reverse environmental and social chaos. Pokopia has a relatively simple plot, focusing on rebuilding the land and, little by little, attracting other Pokémon and even humans back, transforming the region into a true Pokémon utopia, but the path is full of small discoveries, memories spread across the scene and characters with their own stories that give a melancholic and, at the same time, hopeful tone to the experience.

In terms of gameplay, Pokopia is structured like a construction and simulation game, where the player starts practically from nothing, with few resources and few pre-existing buildings. With each interaction with the surroundings, the world expands, allowing you to collect wood, stones, earth and materials, transform them into blocks and items on a workbench and then assemble structures, specific homes for Pokémon, gardens and themed areas.

What sets Pokopia apart from other titles in the genre is the use of Pokémon’s abilities as the player’s own tools. By approaching certain monsters and gaining their trust, Ditto can learn moves like Bulbasaur’s Leafage, which starts to serve as a tool to make green germinate, allowing you to plant grass and bushes in previously sterile areas, or Squirtle’s Water Gun, which works simultaneously as a plant waterer and restores moisture to parched soil. These abilities are not just cosmetic, as they change the way the player deals with the environment, transforming the traditional battle cycle into a creation and reconstruction cycle.

A colorful universe to call home

Pokémon Pokopia has a progression based on environment and comfort levels, which are measured by the presence of Pokémon in the area, the quality of the buildings and the variety of natural elements. As the player plants, builds suitable shelters and fulfills specific requests from some Pokémon, the level of the region increases, unlocking new crafting recipes, new types of furniture and even new areas to explore.

Additionally, Pokopia has a calendar of days and seasons that influences the type of Pokémon that appear, the crops that thrive and the activities that can be done at a given time, which adds a layer of routine and planning, following the playbook of the best simulation games. The pace is purposely slow, so that the player does not run against enemies, at the same time that boredom is combatted by the excellent pace of compensation and achievements, not to mention the friendly, cute, charismatic environment and gameplay that is simply addictive for its simplicity.

It’s funny to see that Nintendo has been losing its fear of daring, reflecting this position in the Pokémon franchise as well. Pokopia, for example, embraced versatility by choosing a Ditto as the protagonist and a structural element of this game’s design. As a species that naturally copies others, Ditto offers a freedom of adaptation that we rarely see in Pokémon games, because its identity is, by definition, changeable.

Throughout Pokémon Pokopia, you can enable new movement skills that allow you to “transform” your own play style depending on the Pokémon you are following, directly linking the story, game evolution and the hundreds of missions. Build, destroy and rebuild are fundamental verbs in this new language that Koei Tecmo and Game Freak have brought to this innovative way of playing Pokémon. In fact, another verb in this Pokopia language is “wait”, meaning you need to wait for tasks to be completed and without using shortcuts to speed up life in this little world.

The art and sound that embrace

In addition, the game has a strong emphasis on cooperative mode, with up to four players building and decorating cities together, sending Pokémon to help in specific areas and even organizing parties to socialize, including the ease of playing with friends through GameShare, with the opportunity to take photos and share your own world designs. All in a unique bet and clearly a pleasant evolution of learning from Animal Crossing.

The art direction of Pokémon Pokopia is largely responsible for the cozy feeling of this title. The game uses a colorful and clean look, with slightly stylized blocks and textures, which refer to both construction games and the classic Pokémon aesthetic, but adapted for a more domestic universe. The scenes start out monochromatic and empty, but as you progress, the map transforms into a mosaic that oozes colors and personality.

The soundtrack also manages to accompany this intention of comfort, with light compositions, which evoke both the calm of taking care of one’s own garden and the nostalgia of an old world trying to resurface. Each region of the game carries its own theme, with melancholic variations for areas in ruins and happier themes when the comfort level increases, which creates a subtle link between the sound and the emotional state of the environment.

Together, the art direction and soundtrack work as a kind of constant hug for the player, rewarding each step taken in the reconstruction with a sense of belonging and accomplishment that few Pokémon games have managed to convey so smoothly.

Pokémon Pokopia is a game that pretends to only deal with blocks and buildings, but in reality, it’s talking about neglect, rebuilding, and care. By exchanging battles for gardening, competition for cooperation and competitive monotony for creative patience, Pokopia not only delivers a comfortable (cozy) experience of impeccable quality, but also opens a new door to what the franchise can be for those who don’t want competitions, exchanging Poké Balls for a break from the rush of life to build something while feeling a warm and rewarding embrace.
