The strongest aftershock of the February earthquake with a magnitude of 3.3 was recorded in the surroundings of Šamorín on Tuesday morning. This was confirmed for TASR by the head of the seismology department of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV), Kristián Csicsay.
According to data from the National Seismic Station Network, the aftershock occurred at 9:02 a.m. On the website of the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center, people from Šamorín write about weak tremors and short tremors. Dotras are described as weak. Residents of Dunajská Lužná, Gabčíkov and Senec also made similar comments.
As stated by the SAS Institute of Earth Sciences on the social network, the earthquake was recorded by the seismic stations of the National Seismic Station Network, the Eastern Slovakia Local Seismic Network, the Adria Array stations, as well as the seismic stations of neighboring countries, especially Hungary, Austria and the Czech Republic. “The institute will analyze records from seismic stations, as well as data on the observed effects of the earthquake,” they clarified.
They also added that in terms of energy released in the form of seismic waves, the aftershock with a local magnitude of 3.3 near Rohovci and Kyselice is approximately 32 times smaller than the main shock with a local magnitude of 4.3 in the same area. At the same time, scientists from the SAS are asking citizens who felt the effects of the earthquake to fill out a questionnaire on their website. The public can thus contribute to the research of earthquakes and their effects on the territory of the Slovak Republic.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.3 with an epicenter near the village of Rohovce in the Dunajská Streda district was recorded by seismologists in the afternoon of February 21. People in Bratislava also felt the tremors. The earthquake was followed by more than 30 aftershocks. So far, the two largest had a magnitude of 2.8.
As reported on the dotrasy social network, the tremors were felt at 10 p.m., where residents also join in. “Our couch was shaking and I heard glasses clinking in my cupboards. It was only a moment, but it really scared me.” Monika said in a comment. “I live on the fourth floor and I felt the whole chair move with me. At first I thought some oversized load had passed outside, but the rumbling was different, so deep and it seemed to come straight from the ground.” Peter described a similar experience.
The vibrations were also accompanied by disturbing sounds that surprised many. “I heard a strange crack, like a beam breaking, and immediately there was a tremor. It only lasted a few seconds, but the dog immediately started barking.” Lucia wrote in the discussion. “At our place it sounded like a distant explosion, the house just shook slightly, but the sound was really unpleasant,” Michal added.
