Michel Temer sees a dysfunctional Brazil – 03/14/2026 – Dora Kramer

The former president () is an engaged spectator of the national scene who, he confesses, does not like what he sees: a complete institutional dysfunctionality. In his opinion, it is the result of the indifference of the three Powers to what the Constitution says.

Starting with the abuse of the preamble that establishes the commitment to “the peaceful resolution of disputes”. The dynamics over the last few years have been reversed. It obeys the logic of permanent friction and reacts badly, aggressively, to disagreements.

There is talk of pacification, but there is hostility related to divisionism. Based on this observation, Temer considers that Brazil will only escape this trap if there is someone in the Presidency of the Republic with a true unifying spirit.

Was he talking about himself? “No way. If I were ten years younger I would even accept the challenge”, he admits, but points out that today, at 85, his time has passed. He adds that, at 80, President Luiz Inácio da Silva (PT) should surrender to the same reality.

He hastens to point out that he is not saying this in favor of the opposing wing, currently represented by (PL), a supporter of the method of unproductive and paralyzing friction. In his view, the path would be to open space for a new generation that understands coexistence between divergent people as a central value of democracy.

“Opposition is essential, but personal hatred is, in addition to being unnecessary, harmful because it prevents the construction of consensus in the midst of dissent, which is the core of politics, the driver of actions and, above all, advances in the rule of law”, he argues.

So, what would be the way out? Again, Michel Temer appeals to the Constitution. In articles 1, which preaches harmonious autonomy between the Powers (containment of each in its own square) and 37, which requires public agents to obey the precepts of legality, impersonality, transparency, morality and efficiency.

“There we have a simple and infallible recipe”, concludes the former president from his observation post.
