Spain condemns the attack on a hospital in Lebanon, an “unacceptable violation” of rights

The Government of Spain condemned this Saturday the attack against a health center in Lebanon, which it described as “a flagrant and unacceptable violation of international humanitarian law“, and has urged that these types of acts be investigated because hospitals “are never military objectives.”

This is stated by the department that directs Jose Manuel Albares in a statement, in which it condemns “in the strongest terms” the Israeli attack against a health center in Bint Jbeil, south of Lebanon, and which has caused the death of twelve members of the medical and health staff.

Condolences to the victims

In the note, on behalf of the Government, conveys its “deepest condolences” to the families of the victims and a quick recovery is wished to the injured.

According to Foreign Affairs, the attacks on hospitals, in scenarios such as Lebanon and Gaza, are a “flagrant” violation of international humanitarian law that “must be investigated“.

WHO condemnation

On the other hand, the World Health Organization (WHO) denounced this Saturday the murder of 14 health workers in southern Lebanon in the last 24 hours alone.

After corroborating information with different sources, the organization said that 12 doctors, paramedics and nurses lost their lives in an attack carried out late on Friday against a primary care center in Bourj Qalaouiyeh. Just a few hours earlier, two paramedics lost their lives in attacks on a health center in Al Sowana.

“These incidents highlight the continued attack on Lebanon’s healthcare systemwhich is crucial for the populations it serves,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

27 attacks

Since March 2, when the new armed confrontation between the Shiite militia Hezbollah and Israel began, linked to the war in Iran, the WHO has verified 27 attacks against healthcare in Lebanon. In these armed acts, a total of 30 people have died and 35 have been injured.

WHO condemns this tragic loss of life and emphasizes that healthcare workers must always be protected. Under international humanitarian law, medical personnel and facilities should never be targeted or militarized,” Tedros stressed in a statement.
