“Nervousness” abroad will not affect Brazil, says Petrobras

Magda Chambriard states that the “Brazilianization” of fuel prices prevents speculation from reaching consumers

To president from , said this Friday (20.mar.2026) that the “nervousness” of the international market, which impacts fuel prices, will not be passed on to the national market because of the strategy of the state-owned company “Brazilianize” fuel prices.

“The Brazilianization of fuel prices is real and is working. We avoid passing on international nervousness and the volatility of international prices to the Brazilian market. When we can, we lower prices and when we need to, we raise them, but the nervousness abroad will not be with Brazil”he stated during the announcement of investment in visit to the facilities of the Gabriel Passos Refinery, in Minas Gerais.

Chambriard made the statement at a time of escalating tensions in the Middle East, which have put pressure on oil prices on the international market.

In this scenario, according to Magda, Petrobras’ strategy seeks to reduce volatility in the domestic market by considering national costs when defining prices, unlike the previous policy based on import parity. According to the state-owned company, the objective is to avoid immediate transfers to the end consumer, especially in times of strong external fluctuations.

The current model, adopted in 2023, differs from the PPI (import parity policy), adopted in previous years, which aligned domestic prices almost entirely with international prices and exchange rates. With the change, the state-owned company now has greater flexibility to smooth external fluctuations.

According to Petrobras, the new guideline helps to avoid immediate transfers of external increases to the end consumer, especially in times of strong volatility. This can contribute to greater predictability in the prices of fuels such as diesel, gasoline and cooking gas.
