The administration led by Donald Trump is considering plans to occupy or blockade Kharg Island, in Iran. The objective is to pressure Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, Axios reported this Friday, citing four different sources with knowledge of the matter.
This in the Persian Gulf supports 90% of Iran’s oil exports and is vital not only to Tehran’s economy but also to the price of oil.
Despite its small size, Kharg Island is a real economic lifeline for the country, responsible for around 90% of Iran’s crude oil exports — which means that any direct attack could cause a major escalation of the conflict.
Kharg Island is a coral outcrop about a third the size of Manhattan, located just 25 kilometers off the Iranian coast in the Persian Gulf.
Almost every day, millions of barrels of crude oil from Iran’s major oil fields — including Ahvaz, Marun and Gachsaran — reach the island via pipelines. Among Iranians, Kharg is known as the “Forbidden Island” due to its strong military control.
