Opel will participate as the official team in the 13th season of Formula E. The announcement was made at the Madrid stage of the 100% electric single-seater championship. The German brand decided to invest in its own structure, which will be based at its headquarters in Rüsselsheim.

Opel GSE’s entry into the championship coincides with the debut of the Gen4 single-seaters, the fourth generation of cars in this competition and which will have 80 hp of power. Opel’s announcement was surprising due to the fact that the brand did not resort to an external competition structure, unlike what happened with other teams in the Stellantis group, such as Citroën, which debuted this season supported by Venturi. DS Automobiles also has an agreement with the North American Penske in the F Championshipfromrmula E. The news of Opel GSE’s participation follows a statement from DS Automobiles, which announced at the end of the Formula 1 projectfromformula E at the end of the 2025/2026 season.

At the head of the Opel GSE team will be the German Jörg Schrott, responsible for creating the OPC (Opel Performance Center) division in 1997, an entity that was active until 2021, the year in which Opel became part of the Stellantis group. Jörg Schrott has also been director of Opel Motorsport since 2012 and the strongman of the GSE (Grand Sport Electric) rally project in the ADAX Opel Electric Rally Cup championship. A championship that began with the Opel Corsa e-Rally in 2021 and currently uses the Opel Mokka GSE. Opel has a long history of competition. In 1992, Walter Röhrl won the WRC with the Opel Ascona, while in 1996, Manuel Reuter drove the Opel Calibra V6 4×4 to victory in the ITC. Before, between 1980 and 1990, Opel had been present in single-seaters with the organization of Ffromrmula Opel, where names such as Michael Schumacher, Rubens Barrichellio and the Portuguese Pedro Lamy passed. The German brand was also an engine supplier for the Ffromrule 3.

Currently, Opel’s strategy involves a focus on electrification. The brand’s CEO, Florian Huettl, highlights the importance of being in Ffromformula E:

“We do this simultaneously with the debut of the Gen4, which represents the ideal moment for us to materialize this bet. The team will demonstrate everything we represent: the capacity of German engineering, the audacious design and the electrified ‘performance’, the qualities of the Mokka GSE and the future Corsa GSE.”

Opel’s agreement with Ffromformula E is for four seasons. It is the fifth German brand to join the championship but will only be the second in activity, joining Porsche. Audi, BMW and Mercedes were already in the championship but ended up preferring to redirect investment to other disciplines. In the Stellantis group, in addition to Opel, Citroën will also be present in the Gen4 of F single-seatersfromrmula E.
