“It’s the people who decide”, says Alckmin after Lula mentions his name to the Senate

Vice-president avoids defining his electoral future, while Tebet is already confirmed and Haddad proposes a vice-president with a moderate profile

The vice-president (PSB) said this Monday (23 March 2026) that the decision on his candidacy in 2026 is up to the people. He was asked about the president’s (PT) statement, who, on Thursday (19th March), cited 2 possibilities for Alckmin: repeating his ticket as vice-president or running for the Senate for São Paulo.

We don’t choose. What will serve the people, the nation, is the population, it is the nation that chooses where to serve us. So let’s wait”, said the vice-president at the end of the BID (Industrial Defense Base) catalog launch event in Brasília.

Lula’s statement was made during the launch event of the (PT) pre-candidacy for the government of São Paulo. Alckmin was present.

Haddad, if he’s my vice, I’m fine, but you need to make a senatorial ticket that will help you win. (…) I don’t know if Geraldo will try for the Senate, but the vice position is open to him.

The PT member also stated that the objective is to take advantage of Alckmin wherever possible “reap more fruits” from the politician.

There is pressure around Haddad for the ticket to be wider. The PT works with the idea of a more competitive candidacy in the State, with a deputy with a moderate profile and links with the business community and agribusiness in the interior. Alckmin is linked to these joints.

Recent research shows that names like Geraldo Alckmin, and appear well positioned in scenarios for the Senate or for composition of the ticket.

The Minister of the Environment is listed and can return to the PT to make her name viable.

Tebet has already confirmed that he will run for the Senate and has joined the PSB, Alckmin’s party. Closing another vacancy with the vice president would reduce the broad membership the party seeks. The articulation with Tebet was precisely to reduce resistance to PT members in the State.
