Attacks against Iran’s power plants promised by the United States if the Strait of Hormuz is not opened within 48 hours – the quotation began on Saturday (21) – could target natural gas plants. Total generation in the country increased by more than 65% between 2010 and 2023, according to the AIE. In 2023, Iran was the second largest electricity producer in the region, behind Saudi Arabia, the IEA reported.

A possible US target is the Damavand combined cycle plant southeast of Tehran. With an estimated capacity of around 3,000 megawatts, it likely represented up to 4% of Iran’s total capacity in recent years. THE Nuclear energy represents a tiny fraction of Iran’s total generationalthough its Bushehr nuclear power plant has already been involved in the conflict after a drone hit the complex where the plant is located.
