The majority of Americans reject military intervention in Iran, concerns are also growing about expensive fuels

Most Americans believe that the US military intervention against Iran has gone too far. This is according to a survey by the AP agency and the research center NORC published on Wednesday. At the same time, many are worried about whether they will be able to afford to buy fuel, but less Republicans than Democrats. TASR informs about it.

  • Most Americans consider the United States’ military intervention against Iran to be excessive.
  • Iran has been resisting attacks by Israel and the United States for almost four weeks.
  • About 59 percent of Americans rate the operation in Iran as a disproportionate action.
  • Two-thirds of Americans want to prevent Iran from getting its own nuclear weapon.
  • Americans remain skeptical of Trump’s ability to use military force properly.

Iran has been resisting Israeli and US attacks for almost four weeks, which began on February 28. Tehran responds with retaliatory strikes against the Jewish state and the countries of the Persian Gulf. Meanwhile, as US President Donald Trump sends more warships and troops to the Middle East, the United States has delivered a 15-point plan to Iran through Pakistan to end the war.

The attitude of the Americans to the intervention

About 59 Americans in the poll said the US military operation in Iran is disproportionate. Nine out of ten Democratic supporters and six out of ten voters who do not identify with any political party agree with this opinion. Republicans are more divided on the issue. Half of them say striking Iran is the right thing to do, but few want it to go further. Conversely, only two in ten Republicans see it as insufficient, while a quarter believe it has gone too far.

However, the AP noted that while Trump’s actions on Iran are unpopular, they are still comparable to other measures he has taken, such as tariffs and the extent of the president’s powers. But the expansion of the US operation in Iran could change that.

Emphasis on the nuclear weapon

In the event of war, there is strong support for at least one of Trump’s stated goals, which is to prevent Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. Two-thirds of Americans think it should be an “extremely” or “very” important foreign policy goal for the US. However, they also often state that it is important to prevent the rise of oil and gas prices in the United States, which are affected by the operation in Iran.

When it comes to Israel’s role in American foreign policy, only about four in ten American adults say preventing Iran from threatening Israel should be a high priority. A little less important to them is the overthrow of the Iranian leadership in favor of a government that would be friendlier to the US.

Skepticism towards Trump

Although supporters of both major political parties largely agree on the need to prevent fuel price increases, the concerns about the current situation are not shared by everyone. Only about three in 10 Republicans are very or very worried about being able to afford to buy fuel in the coming months, compared with six Democrats.

In general, Americans remain skeptical about Trump’s ability to make the right decisions about the use of military force outside the US. In most cases, they oppose more aggressive steps, such as the deployment of ground forces.

The AP poll suggests that while Trump’s popularity remains steady, the conflict could quickly become a major political obstacle for his Republican administration.
