Kassab keeps Caiado and Leite in the running and promises to present a candidate on Tuesday

Amid the PSD’s internal dispute over its pre-candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic, the party’s national president, Gilberto Kassab, stated that the party will have a name defined by next Tuesday. The speech was made alongside the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, after a private meeting that lasted around two hours in Kassab’s apartment, in São Paulo.

The meeting took place one day after the party leader met with the governor of Goiás, Ronaldo Caiado. The Psedista leadership narrowed its choice between the two state leaders and seeks a consensus to avoid internal wear and tear. When detailing the selection process, the president of the party praised the political capital of the two governors remaining at the table and confirmed the tight deadline for the official definition.

— I wouldn’t say that the PSD is the third way. Brazil needs an alternative. It is not possible for us to have just two candidacies that already had this opportunity and that did not give Brazil the answers that Brazil needed. Once again, Governor Eduardo Leite made clear his willingness to put his name forward for examination by the party. This is very positive. It is a party that has two cadres with this size and approval in their states — declared Kassab.

The representative from Rio Grande do Sul, in turn, sought to dispel the narrative that he would be sidelined in the dispute with Caiado. He reinforced the intention of appearing as the framework capable of unifying the political center and dialoguing with different spectrums to break polarization.

— I want to make it clear that I left the conversation with President Kassab very excited, in the sense that not only the PSD’s willingness but also the determination to have a candidacy has been reaffirmed. A party that, over these 15 years, has had the ability to bring together diverse political leaders, good minds who want to think about the country. The party is ripe to present a national project, in addition to having the largest number of mayors and governors and a significant bench in Congress — said Leite.
