Summer fruit is a symbol of freshness and health for everyone. Nevertheless, some species are among the foods most loaded with pesticides. For example, scientists point out that grapes, which are then used to make wine, remain at the top of this unflattering ranking for a long time.
Sweet grapes or peaches are among the most popular summer delicacies. But few people realize what they can contain when consuming them. European data from recent years show that pesticides appear in fruit much more often than we would expect. These are not isolated cases, but a trend that deserves our attention.
Grapes in first place, a surprising result
According to the available analyses, just grapes rank among the fruits with the highest incidence of pesticides. Their residues were found in the vast majority of grapes tested, which makes them one of the main “carriers” of chemical substances in the diet. In some cases, more than twenty different pesticides appeared in a single sample.
They follow right behind them strawberries and peacheswhich also show high values. This situation is not limited to just a few specific crops. Overall, it was found that most of the tested fruits contain at least one type of pesticide, but often also a combination of several substances.
The reason is primarily the method of cultivation. The fruit is susceptible to pests and fungi, which is why more preservatives are used in its production. And it is with grapes that the protection is intense, which is also reflected in the final amount of pesticide residues.
What does this mean for our health?
The presence of pesticides does not automatically mean an immediate risk, experts rather warn of long-term effects. Some substances can disrupt the body with frequent use or burden the organism with regular consumption.
More sensitive groups such as children or pregnant women should therefore be more cautious. It is with them that it is recommended to choose higher quality sources or to limit consumption completely. Quantity and frequency play a fundamental role.
It is also important to know that pesticides often stick to the surface of fruits. This means that proper preparation can at least partially reduce their amount.
How to reduce the risk of a regular purchase
Avoiding pesticides completely is not easy, but there are ways to limit your intake. Thorough washing of the fruit or its peeling helps. An even better option is to go for local or organic products, where the use of chemicals is more strictly controlled.
The choice of food can therefore play a bigger role than it might seem at first glance. Even small changes in shopping can contribute to the fact that you can enjoy fruit with more peace of mind and without unnecessary worries.
