  • Australian police have shot and killed a wanted man, ending a seven-month manhunt.
  • Desmond Freeman fled into the bush after killing two police officers in Victoria.
  • The police searched the difficult-to-access terrain, it was an extremely large-scale operation.
  • Freeman was shot dead at a property in north-east Victoria during a search operation.

Desmond Freeman fled into the bush last August after how shot two police officers in one of the country estates in the state of Victoria. For seven months, police tried to find him in hard-to-reach terrain and spent huge resources on one of the biggest manhunts in Australian history.

“A man was shot dead this morning at a property in North East Victoria as part of the search operation for Desmond Freeman,” the police said in a statement. He was a member of the so-called “sovereign citizen” movement, who believe that they are not subject to laws.

Freeman was 56 years old and opened fire on police officers as they searched his home in the town of Porepunkah. He killed a 59-year-old detective and a 35-year-old lieutenant, while another colleague suffered a gunshot wound. While police did not disclose the reason for the search warrant at the shooter’s home, they said law enforcement officers were investigating sex offenses and crimes against children.
