Former Bolsonaro criminal police officer goes to house arrest – 03/30/2026 – Politics

Former criminal police officer Jorge Guaranho, in Foz do Iguaçu (PR), received authorization to serve his sentence under house arrest, using an electronic ankle bracelet, due to health problems.

The decision was signed by judge Laryssa Angelica Copack Muniz, from the Criminal Executions Court, on March 17th. The following day he was taken to Iguaçu. The Public Ministry spoke in favor of house arrest.

On February 13, 2025, Guaranho was sentenced in the Jury Court to a sentence of 20 years in prison under an initial closed regime. He had been serving his sentence for about a year at the CMP (Penal Medical Complex), in Pinhais, in the metropolitan region of the capital.

The judge understood that it was proven that he has trauma sequelae “compromising his quality of life and autonomy for activities of daily living” and that there is no doubt about the need for specialized care and treatments.

“It is reasonable to extend house arrest to the person sentenced to the closed regime, given that the prison environment does not adequately provide the conditions for the treatment of their illness,” she wrote.

The defense lawyer, Amanda Nocera, stated in a statement that the decision “does not represent impunity, nor does it change the course of the criminal execution, only ensuring that the sentence is served under conditions compatible with the health status of the convict.”

“The defense reaffirms its respect for due legal process, institutions and the seriousness of the case, especially given its repercussion, recognizing that the decision rendered appears to be legally appropriate and aligned with the principles of criminal execution”, says the lawyer.

The former criminal police officer was convicted of double homicide, for futile reasons (political disagreement) and common danger (firing shots in an environment with other people). The physical consequences mentioned by the defense are related to the day of the crime.

On July 9, 2022, Marcelo, who was celebrating his 50th birthday in the hall of a club in Foz do Iguaçu, together with family and friends.

The PT member wore a t-shirt with the image of the then candidate Lula, and the decoration made references to the PT, such as red balloons. Guaranho and Marcelo did not know each other, but, upon learning about the party’s theme, the then criminal police officer decided to go to the place shouting the name of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in provocation to the guests.

On the sound system in his car, he turned on a playlist with songs from the then president’s campaign. Marcelo responded to the provocation, shouting “[Bolsonaro] in jail”, and, after a quick discussion with Guaranho, he picked up dirt and threw it into the criminal police officer’s car. Guaranho left, but returned shortly afterwards.

The second time he appeared at the party, Guaranho got out of the car, and civil police officer Pamela Silva, Marcelo’s companion, showed her badge, asking him to leave. But Guaranho saw Marcelo in the background, behind Pamela, and started shooting at him.

Marcelo was hit with two shots. He was taken to a hospital, but died in the early hours of the following day, July 10th.

Even though he was down after being shot by Guaranho, Marcelo managed to shoot the criminal police officer, who fell to the ground and was also kicked by three men. He was admitted to a hospital and was subsequently arrested.
