After mobilizing people from all over the country, the online vote that would choose the name of the jaguar cub born in Pará came to an end. BioParque Vale Amazônia announced, this Sunday (29), that the animal was named “Xingu”, a name that received the majority of votes from the public.
The choice was announced during the special program that celebrated the 41st anniversary of the space, located in Serra dos Carajás, in Parauapebas, southeast of the state.
Look:
In total, more than 28 thousand participations. The name Xingu led with more than 56% of the votes. Next were Solimões, with 27.7%, and Tapajós, with 16.3%. The three options have indigenous origins and make reference to important rivers in the Amazon.
Xingu is an endangered species. It has Cerrado genetics and was born from a breeding program conducted by the park’s technical team. The birth is considered a milestone for the conservation of the species, a symbol of Brazilian biodiversity.
In the last 12 years, BioParque Vale Amazônia has registered seven, the result of continuous work aimed at the preservation and well-being of animals.
Parents’ story
The cub’s parents, Marília and Zezé, arrived at the park from Goiás. The female was rescued from illegal captivity, while the male was born in an institution and is also the son of rescued animals.
Because they were removed from their natural habitat and kept under human influence, they cannot be reintroduced into the wild, a common reality in cases of seizure, when animals lose essential skills to survive in the wild.
Currently, the couple lives under permanent care at BioParque and integrates conservation and environmental education actions, helping to raise public awareness about the importance of combating wildlife trafficking.
According to the veterinarian responsible for the animal, the jaguar must leave the internal area of the enclosure, where it receives special care, during the first half of the year, when it can be presented to visitors.
